Introduction:
The project Homes in the City is an initiative to uplift and empower the urban poor community of Bhuj City in Kutch through community led efforts, that is, strengthening Area / Ward Committees and Councillors, as envisaged in the 74th Amendment to the Constitution
The program has demonstrated empowerment through access to information, and use of sustainable housing and decentralized technologies for basic services of domestic water, sanitation, and solid waste management, organising and institutionalising women’s SHG in to a city level federation.
The program proposes the scaling up of these initiatives through a partnership of five NGO’s, Kutch MahilaVikasSangathan (KMVS), Hunnarshala Foundation, Sahjeevan, Arid Communities and Technologies (ACT) and BhujSetu (Abhiyan).
Homes in the City (HIC) is a collective initiative of 5 civil society organisations working in Bhuj city. The aim is to improve urban governance to demonstrate principle of participatory democracy and public disclosures in governance systems so that city can provide basic services and dignified like for all in a sustainable manner. As the programme is collaborative initiative where each partner bring in subject / sector expertise to focus on citizen's drive, closely working with disadvantage section of the city to organise them into association and to participate in governance process through area Sabha and ward committees, initiate dialogues with state and centre to influence government policy and programmes it is important to have independent anchor of the programme who holds the vision for the city and take charge of programme management, partnerships, liasoning with stakeholders and positioning
